Artist Statement

There isn’t an aspect of photography I don’t love. As an art form there are so many possibilities. I’m interested in what makes people tick, what they do and why. I like to observe patterns in people’s movement through the spaces they occupy and, occasionally, their reactions to one another. I don’t typically go looking for a photograph. As with a lot of things in life, you’re often presented with a unique gesture, an arrangement of shapes, a reflection or an interesting fall of light. The world can be a complete surprise.

History

Reformed web design and graphic designer. I started out from school doing a typesetting trainee-ship just as the first Macs started to appear with Aldus PageMaker. The principals of good design didn't change much with these new advances it just made it accessible to everyone with the desire to produce their own work. For years after the appearance of Macs and PCs folk were proclaiming the death of print. It's nice to see that they were wrong.

After a stint in the print world I started teaching myself web design and submerging myself in the intricacies of HTML, CSS and the necessary code to allow clients to use a content management system, thereby allowing luddites (I use that term affectionately) to control their own websites.

In 2015 I started turning my attention to photography as a way to escape 'always doing work for other people'. I wanted to produce the kind of work that I wanted to look at. With taking that attitude I also allowed myself the mental space to feel criticism, praise or to be completely ignored, all of which has taken time to get used to.

In 2018 I studied a Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging at WSI TAFE, NSW and gained an excellence award upon graduation. During that study period I received my first commission from the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre for seven photographic works for their permanent collection.
